The craft practices of Indigenous peoples from all over the world have been getting increased attention and appreciation globally over the last few decades. It has also become a topic that has occupied its fair share of discourse in academia and in art education. As a contribution to this interest in Indigenous art and crafts practices, we offer this book on Sámi duodji.
Duodji is the artistic crafts form of the Indigenous people of the European Arctic. Duodji refers not only to the end result, the finished object itself, but also describes the whole process – from the incipient idea to the final product. Duodji demonstrates a holistic circle of creation, how nature and humans collaborate in recognising, visualising, and shaping items that serve the need for both practical use and aesthetic form.
The publication is edited by the professors Gunvor Guttorm and Harald Gaski, and contains essays from eleven prominent Sámi scholars, duojárat, and writers from North, South, and Lule Sámi areas. The essays are presented in Lule, South or North Sámi as well as in English. The publication also contains a wide-ranging selection of photographs of duodji by more than thirty contemporary duojárat.
The book is well-suited both as background and text material for education in crafts, as well as a resource for the theory and practice of Sámi duodji as an Indigenous art form with long roots in the Arctic North.

Antologi med samiske tekster i engelsk oversettelse. Utvalget av tekster er hentet fra de siste 400 år. Her finnes samiske fortellinger og poesi som skildrer alt fra hvordan verden ble til, hvordan Sápmi ble bebodd og til fortellinger om hvordan samene har kjempet mot kolonisering og assimilering.
Trusselen om en gruveboom har ført til en mobilisering og blåst nytt liv i samisk aktivisme, hvor kampen om Gállok i 2013 som en milepæl.
mi i ord och bild del II er en antologi med rikt illustrerte artikler om musikk, jojk, duodji, historie og rasebiologi. Her finnes interessante tekster om samer i kunsten og samiske kunstnere og om samer i litteraturen og samiske forfattere. Leseren får her innblikk i en minoritet sin kamp for sin eksistens og for sitt levesett mot majoritetsbefolkningens dominans og føringer.
Sedan tidigt 1990-tal har Svenska kyrkan varit engagerad i arbete för att skapa större utrymme för samers kultur och erfarenheter i gudstjänster och övrigt församlingsliv. Vid konferensen Ságastallamat hösten 2011 framförde samiska representanter krav på att Svenska kyrkan skulle klarlägga och erkänna de oförrätter som kyrkan utsatt samerna för genom historien. Fördjupad kunskap om de övergrepp som förekommit från kyrkans sida ansågs vara en förutsättning för en fortsatt försoningsprocess. Svenska kyrkans teologiska kommitté initierade därför ett vetenskapligt dokumentationsprojekt som inleddes senhösten 2012. Syftet med projektet var att ge en allsidig belysning av hur samerna och deras kultur påverkats av kyrkans verksamhet, men fokus skulle ligga på det som varit problematiskt.
