    Hvordan ble urfolkene i Fennoskandia (den skandinaviske halvøy (Norge og Sverige), Finland, Kolahalvøya og Karelen i Russland) og andre deler av verden beskrevet og forstått av europeiske lærde på 1500-, 1600- og 1700-tallet? Og hvilken rolle spilte kunnskapen om nordområdene i den europeiske idéhistorien?

    Dette er blant spørsmålene som utforskes i den nye bokutgivelsen «Learned Discourses on the Indigenous in Fennoscandia and Beyond, c. 1500–1800″.

    Boka løfter fram en rik, men delvis glemt kulturarv. Gjennom nye perspektiver på lite studerte akademiske tekster og manuskripter undersøker bidragsyterne hvordan kunnskap om urfolk, geografi og samfunn i nordområdene ble utviklet og formidlet i tidlig moderne tid.

    Universitetsbibliotekarene Per Pippin Aspaas og Andreas Klein ved UiT – Norges arktiske universitet er bidragsytere og redaktører sammen med Anna Fredriksson. Håkan Rydving har skrevet etterordet. Andre bidragsytere er Henning Hansen, Hans Beelen, Ronny Spaans, Joanna Kodzik, Konsta Kaikkonen, Toon Van Hal, Taarna Valtonen, Jonas Wellendorf, Ralph Tuchtenhagen, Simon Franzen, Francis Young, and Mads Langballe Jensen.

    Northernmost Europe was central to several salient questions preoccupying the minds of the early modern Republic of Letters. Both laity and learned elites strove to understand the physical geography and ethnic composition of these vast borderlands, whose indigenous populations were especially intriguing. While some books and maps succeeded in reaching a wide market, the major bulk of knowledge production is today traceable only in all-but-forgotten academic treatises and manuscripts. Each chapter of this volume approaches this rich cultural heritage from a fresh angle and brings rarely studied documents to the attention of modern readers.

    «The Craft of Belonging» utforsker håndverkets rolle og dets formidling av sosiale grenser, spesielt i samfunn som er under statlig press. Antropologene Matthew Magnani og Natalia Magnani blander antropologi og arkeologi for å utforske håndverkets rolle i samfunnsdannelse fra forhistorisk tid til i dag med samene, urfolkene i Nord-Europa.

    The Craft of Belonging explores the role of craft and its mediation of social boundaries, particularly in communities that are under state pressure. Anthropologists Matthew Magnani and Natalia Magnani blend anthropology and archaeology to explore the role of craft in community-making from prehistory to present with the Sámi, the Indigenous peoples of Northern Europe.

    Sápmi, the Sámi homeland, has sat at a material crossroads for millennia. Forests, tundras, and extended social networks offered raw materials autochthonous and imported. Wood, antler, cloth, and silver were crafted to cope with Arctic climates and state incursions. Integrating archaeological, ethnographic and Indigenous perspectives to reveal the transformative nature of material culture, The Craft of Belonging shows how long-term perspectives accentuate the shifting meanings and malleability of material social boundaries.

    Local agencies intersect with changing trade networks, colonialism and climate change, to resonate through the production, uses and signals of Sámi craft (duodji). This book thus contends that ancestral material cultures, far from static cultural domains, are innovative sites of social transformation used to assert rights to land, water, and community belonging.

  • Stéphane Aubinet: Why Sámi Sing – Knowing through Melodies in Northern Norway


    En antropologisk undersøkelse av Stéphane Aubinet om en sangpraksis som finnes blant urbefolkningen som bor i den nordligste delen av Europa. Den spør hvordan fremføringen av melodier, med eller uten tekster, kan være en måte å endre oppfatningen på, forholde seg til menneskelige og ikke-menneskelige tilstedeværelser, eller engasjere seg i fortiden.

    Ifølge sine utøvere er den samiske «joiken» mer enn et musikalsk repertoar laget av mennesker: det er en vokalkraft mottatt fra omgivelsene, en som avslører sine muligheter med sparsomhet gjennom praksis og erfaring.

    Why Sámi Sing is an anthropological inquiry into a singing practice found among the Indigenous Sámi people, living in the northernmost part of Europe. It inquires how the performance of melodies, with or without lyrics, may be a way of altering perception, relating to human and non-human presences, or engaging with the past. According to its practitioners, the Sámi «yoik» is more than a musical repertoire made up by humans: it is a vocal power received from the environment, one that reveals its possibilities with parsimony through practice and experience. Following the propensity of Sámi singers to take melodies seriously and experiment with them, this book establishes a conversation between Indigenous and Western epistemologies and introduces the «yoik» as a way of knowing in its own right, with both convergences and divergences vis-à-vis academic ways of knowing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of anthropology, ethnomusicology, and Indigenous studies.
