This new and expanded collection of Sámi proverbs presents values and views of life among an Arctic Indigenous people inhabiting the northernmost regions of Scandinavia. The Sámi contend that it is better to be on the move than stay stuck in one place – that is to say, the diametrical opposite to the English saying, “…there’s no place like home.”
Drawing from archival as well as living oral tradition, editor and retired professor in Sámi culture and literature, Harald Gaski presents proverbs here in their original language, along with English translations and contextualizing interpretations.
Introducing Sámi adages to new readers has also been a process of translating a culture. Some of the proverbs have a mythological base while others reflect how Sámi considered the Scandinavians that came north to colonize. While the proverbs often reflect ancient perspectives, they are also often surprisingly timely, with wisdom for dealing with modern social media and the complexities of modern life.
