Niillas Holmberg: The Way Back – Poems in Sámi

Inspired by his studies in northern India at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Niillas Holmberg explores the intriguing connections between Buddhist philosophy and the old natural philosophy of his Sámi forebears. Half the poems here were written on the move; the other half, written in his native land, describe various states of movement. The ambiguity of these states forms the basis of this collection.
Niillas Holmberg is a musician, actor, activist and writer from Ohcejohka in Sámiland, Finland. He is the author of three collections of poetry and has performed at literary events and festivals in Europe, Asia and South America.

Máret Ánne Sara: In between worlds

For aldersgruppa 12-16 år.
In Between Worlds is a translation of Máret Ánne Sara’s debut book, Ilmmiid gaskkas, published in the Sámi language in 2013 and nominated for the Nordic Council’s award for children’s and young people’s literature in 2014. In the novel the writer weaves together elements of contemporary reality and Sami beliefs to form a mysterious twilight world.
Sanne and Lemme are siblings in a traditional reindeer-herding family. The brother Lemme loves dirt biking and is eagerly looking forward to the new dirt bike track now under construction. In town, his sister Sanne meets a delirious man who babbles something incomprehensible about the ”devil’s children.”
After their father’s outburst at the dinner table about how recklessly people, including Lemme, are destroying the grazing lands that the reindeer need, just for the fun of a new dirt bike track, Lemme leaves in a huff. Sanne follows and hops onto the dirt bike behind him.
The teenagers disappear without a trace, and back at home their parents are consumed by grief and despair. Where are they, what happened? All that was found was Lemme’s dirt bike at the construction site for the new track.

Mattias Åhrén: Indigenous Peoples’ Status in the International Legal System

Engelsk tekst.
Provides new insights into indigenous peoples’ rights and explains the rationale for why indigenous peoples are entitled to such rights
Investigates why an understanding of ‘peoples’ is paramount in determining whether indigenous peoples are beneficiaries of the right to self-determination
Examines how the notion of equality fundamentally impacts the rights that indigenous peoples possess over traditionally used territories and natural resources

Visions of Sápmi

Idioms of Sámi Health and Healing

The Sámi—indigenous people of northernmost Europe—have relied on traditional healing methods over generations. This pioneering volume documents, in accessible language, local healing traditions and demonstrates the effectiveness of using the resources local communities can provide. This collection of essays by ten experts also records how ancient healing traditions and modern health-care systems have worked together, and sometimes competed, to provide solutions for local problems. Idioms of Sámi Health and Healing is one of the first English-language studies of the traditional healing methods among the Sámi, and offers valuable insight and academic context to those in the fields of anthropology, medical anthropology, transcultural psychiatry, and circumpolar studies. Idioms of Sámi Health and Healing is the second volume in the Patterns of Northern Traditional Healing series. Edited by Barbara Helen Miller.

Thomas Kuhn, Consuelo Griggio: Sápmi skyar – myter och vetenskap över svenska Lappland/Sápmi skies – myth and science over Swedish Lapland

SÁPMI SKIES – Myth and science over Swedish Lapland is a wondrous journey through two dimensions of the sky in the Swedish Arctic: the mythological and the scientific. This book wishes to stimulate a dialogue between science and Sami mythology by recognising the intrinsic value of both viewpoints. It is organised as a four-voice conversation in which stunning Arctic sky phenomena such as the northern lights, sun pillars, and sun dogs are presented and interpreted through Sami stories and memories, scientific explanations, pictures and paintings.
Anthropologist Consuelo Griggio (Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada) and Natural scientist Thomas Kuhn (Luleå University of Technology, Sweden) join their passion and knowledge of their respective fields and embark in a project in which native mythology and science share a beautiful and magical place, namely Swedish Lappland.

Indigenous Rights in Scandinavia

Edited by Christina Allard, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden and UiT The Arctic University of Norway and Susann Funderud Skogvang, UiT The Arctic University of Norway
This book contributes to the international debate on Indigenous Peoples Law, containing both in-depth research of Scandinavian historical and legal contexts with respect to the Sami and demonstrating current stances in
Sami Law research. In addition to chapters by well-known Scandinavian experts, the collection also comments on the legal situation in Norway, Sweden and Finland in relation to other jurisdictions and indigenous peoples, in particular with experiences and developments in Canada and New Zealand.
The book displays the current research frontier among the Scandinavian countries, what the present-day issues are and how the nation states have responded so far to claims of Sami rights. The study sheds light on the contrasts between the three countries on the one hand, and between Scandinavia, Canada and New Zealand on the other, showing that although there are obvious differences, for instance related to colonisation and present legal solutions, there are also shared experiences among the indigenous peoples and the States.
Filling a gap in an under-researched area of Sami rights, this book will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers with an interest in Indigenous Peoples Law and comparative research.
